ALL is set for this year’s Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited Cancer Power Walk taking place today at Old Hararians Sports Club in Milton Park, Harare.

The event, which starts at 6am, is expected to draw a large number of people from all spheres of life to participate in raising awareness on cancer.

This year the event incorporates a 10-kilometre run and is also happening in Bulawayo, Kariba, Mutare, Masvingo and Gweru.

Cancer and other non-communicable diseases now pose a serious threat to people’s health and has resulted in many deaths and devastation in many families.

Zimpapers public relations and corporate affairs manager, Mrs Pauline Matanda, thanked the corporate world for partnering with Zimpapers.

“A special thanks goes to our platinum sponsors FBC and Sunny Yifeng who have helped us in making the event possible,” she said. “We want as many Harare residents as possible to join us at this year’s edition which is going to be much bigger and better.

“We know that at family level, we all have a friend or relative who is suffering from cancer and we want to raise funds for this worthy cause.

“This is not a women’s event since we are coming from breast cancer awareness month, but it is a family event because there is prostate cancer for men and child cancers as well. There will be free services such as HIV and AIDS testing, BP checks, Body Mass Index (BMI) checks and free cancer screening, among other services.”

Zimpapers as part of its corporate social responsibility has adopted cancer as a cause and partnered Island Hospice in 2015 as a technical partner to work in not only raising awareness about cancer, but also mobilising support for cancer causes.

Mrs Matanda said people needed each other to fight cancer which is not a Harare issue only, but a problem affecting the whole world.

Other sponsors include Micour Visions, National Aids Council, Bata, Randnet, Refresher Mineral Water, Clean Zimbabwe, Wellness Medical Aid, Amtec Motors, Aspect Mining, Embassy of the Republic of China, Zimvest, Mashwede, Rue’s Paper Flowers, ZTIF, Ambulance Care, Men’s Health Clinic, Karorina’s, Cole Aiden Investments, Fusertech and Zimnat.
