The Harare Civil Court last week refused to give a Harare man who claimed his wife was violent a protection order after listening to the wife and finding that the application by the husband had no merit.Edson Nyamuruma told the court he decided to separate with his wife Millit Chikoto because of her violent behaviour and applied for a protection order against Chikoto whom he said was in the habit of verbally and physically abusing him, an allegation Chikoto denied saying their disputes were over Nyamuruma’s failure to fend for his family.

“I was evicted from the premises where I was selling my plumbing material because she used to frequent the place attacking me in public,” he said.

Nyamuruma complained to Harare Civil Court magistrate Mr Brighton Pabwe that Chikoto was also in the habit of visiting her boyfriends during odd hours and if he tried to reprimand her she became violent.

“She once went to live with her boyfriend in South Africa only to return after three months,” said Nyamuruma.

Nyamuruma said he decided to leave his matrimonial home because he was tired of being abused by his wife.

Chikoto denied the allegation levelled against her by Nyamuruma and accused him of abusing her instead.

“He is lying because I have neither physically nor verbally abused him as he is alleging,” she said.

Chikoto said they where constantly having disputes because her husband was not fending for the family and denying her food.

“When I left home I never went to South Africa, but I went straight to my parents’ rural home after he had physically abused me,” she  said

Mr Pabwe dismissed Nyamuruma’s protection order application due to lack of merit.
