An incarcerated Banket man, who is serving an eight-year jail term for defrauding several people while masquerading as Chief Chidziva, has been slapped with another two-year jail term.

Charles Jenami (39) of Kuwadzana Township in Banket duped John Solomon Marau (70) of Musanhu Village in Makonde in April 2013 of two cows and money valued at $1 200.

Jenami is serving another jail term that ends in 2022 in which he was convicted of eight counts of fraud involving amounts of up to $10 000 from various complainants. After a full trial before Chinhoyi magistrate Ms Jessie Kufa, it was established that Jenami, who purported to be Chief Chidziva in Banket appointed an agent, Godfrey Chirandu to allocate land to people.

The State says in April 2013, Marau, who is a farmer, was approached by Chirandu who was claiming to be Chidziva’s agent and offered him land. The State established that in April 2013, Jenami misrepresented facts that he had a plot.

Acting upon the misrepresentation, Murau paid the money and was allocated a plot in Raffingora and was ordered to pay two beasts in addition to $350. Marau’s structures were demolished by Zvimba Rural District Council and he was told that the land belonged to the council. He approached Chirandu and he was promised another piece of land, but that never materialised.

It was for that reason Jenami was hauled before the courts facing fraud defined in section 136 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9;23. The total value he defrauded is $1 200 and nothing was recovered. In court, Jenami denied the offence, but Ms Kufa convicted him after overwhelming evidence. Eugene Moyo prosecuted.
