Three university students joined the seventh edition of the global Huawei ICT competition which aims to cultivate ICT talent within Zimbabwe and foster national development.

Speaking at the Huawei ICT send-off held in Harare yesterday, Enterprise solutions manager of Huawei Tafadzwa Muriritirwa said they were excited to be part of this competition.

“Three high-performing best students were selected after regional level online exams to represent at the final global level, two best students from University of Zimbabwe and the other one from TelOne Centre for Learning were selected.”

The Huawei ICT competition was seen as a great opportunity for the students to secure as much knowledge as possible so as to contribute to the economy of Zimbabwe.

This was revealed by Minister of Information Communication Technology and Courier Services Jenfan Muswere who graced the occasion.

“The purpose of the send-off is to appreciate the role of ICT Huawei and that the students are involved in terms of innovation and grasp knowledge, our expectation is to raise the Zimbabwean flag high through innovation, it’s also an opportunity for Zimbabweans to be able to gain the necessary skills to build functional digital systems.”

Minister Muswere challenged the students to make use of the opportunity rendered in a quest to develop the country.

“Ensure to be ICT soldiers, as Zimbabweans we want to have software side and manufacture ICT home-based solutions that contributes to the economy of Zimbabwe”, he said.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude saying the competition is of significance in attaining knowledge.

Tinashe Mahweku, a final year student at the University of Zimbabwe pursuing electronic and telecommunications said he was appreciative of the opportunity rendered.

“It’s a great opportunity for me as I will be able to apply the knowledge which I attained from school and to the world, being selected by Huawei is a stepping stone for me.”
