Government has released about $250 000 for the refurbishment of sports clubs across Mashonaland West Province, with work already underway at Tengwe Country Club in Hurungwe District.

The development has also seen Government signing a memorandum of understanding with the Hurungwe District Council that will result in a major facelift for Tengwe Sports Club, with similar modalities set to be implemented for other country clubs in the province.
In an interview recently, Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Mashonaland West Province deputy director Mr Edias Mavune said Government has lined up programmes to revive the country clubs.

Most country clubs, previously run by mining companies and farmers across Mashonaland West, have either been neglected or totally abandoned, resulting in serious deterioration of infrastructure.

“Government is refurbishing country clubs in the province with the first one being Tengwe in Hurungwe district, said Mr Mavune. We have already signed a memorandum with the local authority last week.”

Mr Mavune said Government had already released funds for the project at Tengwe Sports Club.
Meanwhile, speaking on the sidelines of the Roman Catholic Church West Deanery family sports and fun day at Hartley 1 Primary School in Chegutu, said Government would engage all churches to participate in sporting activities.Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation director Mrs Euginia Chidhakwa who officiated at the family and fun day said family and sports day created a platform that contributed towards bringing various communities together with its major aim being uniting people through sport.

“Family and sports fun day enhances opportunity of interaction and creating sound relationships which is a vital component in our society. It also promotes fitness and wellness which is a pre-requisite to everyone,” she said.

“The programme resonates very well with the Ministry’s programme of community sport and recreation club system which incorporates schools, uniformed forces, tertiary institutions, churches and people in the community.”

She applauded the Roman Catholic Church for leading in promoting fitness and wellness through sport and recreation activities.
“The community sport and recreation club system stimulates mass participation in sport and recreation by all people including youth, women, persons with disability and the elderly to address issues of discipline, healthy lifestyles, community development and social cohesion,” she said.

Mrs Chidhakwa said wellness programmes are the most effective strategic interventions to deal with non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes.

People participated in various disciplines including track events, ball games (soccer, netball and volleyball), pot brace and sack racing.
