SCORES of people are expected to throng Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President Robert Mugabe’s rural home in Zvimba today to bid farewell to the liberation icon.

Zvimba sub chief Mr Raphael Zvimba said the community was expecting multitudes to come and pay their last respects to Cde Mugabe.

“As you can see, people from all walks of life are already gathered here and we expect more to come and bid farewell to one of their own,” said Mr Zvimba.

He described the late national hero as a humble man who contributed towards development of the Zvimba community.

“Most people used to receive Christmas gifts from the former President. Some used to attend church service with him at Kutama Catholic Mission. He used to spend most of his weekends with the community. Attending church services at Kutama together with his family,” he said.

He added: “He was my son-in-law, but he knew his boundaries despite the fact that he was older than me and he was the President of Zimbabwe. When he was in Zvimba, Cde Mugabe was just like any ordinary person who loved the company of his long-time friends.”

Chief Zvimba said the late Cde Mugabe used to guide and counsel the youth with a view to moulding them into responsible and productive nationals.

“Most of the youth here benefited through the Presidential Scholarship scheme,” he said.

Village Head Mr Onius Murungweni said the former President was a unifier.

“He was a principled leader who attended to issues without fear or favour. He hated gossiping and encouraged everyone to look into the family matters diligently,” he said.

Zanu-PF chairman for Kutama Mazorodze District Cde Tinos Manyongovere said they used to discuss political issues with the late former President.

“We used to discuss party mobilisation strategies to win elections. He was very frank on matters related to Zanu-PF,” said Cde Manyongovere.
