Zvimba RDC clears $7,4m Zimra debt

Zvimba Rural District Council is expecting to channel more resources towards developmental projects after paying off the $7,4 million it owed the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) late last year.

Zvimba RDC chief executive Mr Peter Hlohla said they were now firmly focused on service delivery since the debt which had been compromising service delivery had been dealt with.

“The write-off of ZIMRA debt releases more funds to service delivery and that is a positive development for the 2019 financial year,” he said.

Mr Hlohla said residents and ratepayers in Zvimba expected more from council, but their expectations were not being met because of the debt.

He said council would continue to look at ways of boosting its revenue collection such as allowing its clients to make payment plans and running promotions to ensure that debts were settled.

Council, Mr Hlohla said, was working tirelessly on resource mobilisation to improve the living conditions of people in the district despite its limited resources.

“The best is to enforce payment and also to look for alternative funding sources,” he said. “The current sources are clearly not sufficient.

“We are working very hard to mobilise resources and our hope this year is to bring positive economic fortunes that benefit all Zimbabweans.”

Besides clearing the ZIMRA debt, Zvimba RDC also bought a refuse compactor and water bowser for Banket which were expected to be delivered soon. Council also rehabilitated approximately 626 kilometres, while tarring about 1,6km of its road network.
