LIBERTY Zvenyika of the Mounted Regiment in Inkomo was yesterday crowned the 2018 champion in the annual Commander Zimbabwe National Army skill at arms shooting contest at Cleveland Rifle Range. The 32-year-old, who is a sergeant in the ZNA, outclassed over 200 other competitors in the demanding two-week long event.

Zvenyika’s victory underlined the dominance by his team as he became the fourth winner of the prestigious completion from his side in the last eight years.

His teammates Privilege Kundongwe, Charles Kamutando, and Tinashe Mambara delivered the gong to the club in 2011, 2012 and 2014.

“I have been participating in this event for four years now.
“One thing for sure is, all those who participated at this meet are good enough and although I have been working extremely hard to claim the prize, I have been coming short.

“But, this time around, after correcting all the mistakes I think I have been committing, I am living a dream.
“It was not an easy two weeks, competing with seasoned guys.
“I am glad I managed to hold my own and here I am.

“I would like to thank my teammates who motivated me to be where I am now. I hope the win will be the starting point for bigger things to come,” he saud.

His trainer Maxwell Sibanda, who also won an award, said they were now geared up for the Presidential Medal Shoot scheduled for September.

Brenda Ganyiwa of Headquarters Artillery Brigade won the best female award, piping over 100 other contestants.
Parachute Regiment emerged as the best formation out of the lot which also included civilian clubs affiliated to the National Rifle Association of Zimbabwe.

Commander ZNA Edzai Chimonyo, who was the guest of honour at the prize-giving ceremony, encouraged competitors to keep on perfecting their skills.
