ZRP Team at SARPCCO Games increase medals tally

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police team had by yesterday scooped 10 gold, 19 silver and eight bronze medals during the ongoing 11th edition of the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisations (SARPCCO) Games in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The medals all came from the athletics teams who have been participating since Sunday.

Those who managed to scooped the medals include top Zimbabwe long-distance runner Isaac Mpofu who obtained the first gold for the team and a bronze in the men’s finals of the 10 000m and 5 000m respectively while Olivia Chitate managed to get a silver medal in the women’s 10 000m event and another silver in the 5 000m race.

In the men’s 800m event, Blessmore Chidziva scooped silver and was emulated by Elijah Mabhunu who got a silver in 5 000m race while in the women’s discus-final Zimbabwe won all the medals through Gayrod Takaendesa, Rejoice Nyamajiwa and Linda Nyamutswa. In the women’s long jump event Gladys Mukome won a gold medal while Molly Ngwarati bagged a silver.

Zimbabwe also won two medals — a silver and bronze — in the men’s discus through John Nyakonda and Isiah Mupfayi while Nyasha Gadaga also won a bronze in the 400m women relay.

In netball, Zimbabwe, who are being led by former senior national team goal shooter Pauline Jani, went down 45-41 to Zambia yesterday.

Tanzania has 12 gold, seven silver and nine bronze. Namibia Police has five gold, two silver and nine bronze while Swaziland has three gold, two silver and nine bronze.

Mozambique has two bronze only.

The 11th edition of the SARPCCO Games is expected to end on September 15.

The Games are meant to create a platform for police officers from the region to engage in fruitful interaction, sharing ideas on policing traditions and fostering regional friendship, understanding and cooperation through sport.

In 2019, the ZRP won the overall trophy at the 10th edition of these Games, which were held in Angola, for the fifth time in a row.

Team Zimbabwe scooped 20 gold, 25 silver and 21 bronze medals to make it a total of 66 medals. Team Zimbabwe also received trophies for netball, athletics and darts.

SARPCCO is the primary force in Southern Africa in the prevention and fighting of cross-border crimes.

Formed in 1995 in Zimbabwe, the organisation has firmly established itself as a benchmark for international police cooperation.

This regional organisation is supported by the Sub-Regional Bureau of Interpol in Harare, which coordinates its activities and programmes. Priority crimes in the SADC region are terrorism, motor vehicle thefts, drugs and counterfeit pharmaceuticals, economic and commercial crimes, firearms and explosives, trafficking in gold, diamonds and other precious stones and metals, crimes against women and children, illegal immigrants and stolen and lost travel documents, wildlife crime and endangered species and human trafficking.
