THE Zimbabwe Republic Police is fully behind the Command Agriculture Programme and is determined to play its part to ensure that it remains a success, Mashonaland Central provincial spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe has said.

He said the police were there to promote peace and sustainable agricultural production for economic stability.

Speaking at the Mazowe Agriculture Show, where the police force scooped the first prize in the best exhibitor in the Government departments’ category last Saturday, Insp Mundembe said farmers used to lose a lot of cattle before the police took the leading role in cattle branding for easy identification of their animals.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is fully behind Government’s agricultural programme, the Command Agriculture, as its activities resonates well with this year’s Mazowe Agriculture Show theme, ‘Enhancing Farming production Through Value addition’.

“ZRP is taking a leading role in cattle branding for easy identification of farmers’ livestock when they stray to other areas. It will be easy to trace their owner unlike in the past when farmers used to lose cattle, some of which were auctioned by local authorities after the owners failed to claim them. We are also playing a leading role in stock clearing initiatives so that there is sanity in the sector, which has seen a decline in cases of stock theft,” said Insp Mundembe.

He said police were also conducting farm patrols to deter would-be offenders. Other winners at the show were the Tobacco Research Board, which scooped the prize for the best exhibitor in the parastatals category, while Fredda Rebecca Mine were winners in the private sector category.
