ZRP launches blitz to decongest cities Comm-Gen Matanga

Police have launched an operation to decongest the Harare central business district (CBD) and other cities with a view to bringing order and sanity.

The move, the force said, was in line with President Mnangagwa’s vision that the country is open for business and as such citizens should respect the law.

President Mnangagwa’s vision of opening the country for business is aimed at creating a middle-income economy in the next 12 years.

All arms of Government are already playing their role to that   effect.

Traffic congestion in the CBDs is one such challenge that slows the movement of people and goods in various business sectors.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched an awareness campaign aimed at decongesting Harare central business district and other cities in line with President Mnangagwa’s vision of being open for business and upholding the rule of law by all citizens.

“The police is urging members of the public to conduct business activities at out skirt shopping centres such as High Glen, Westgate and Sam Levy. In the same vein, lorries and delivery trucks are implored to stick to their given routes in order to decongest the Central Business District.

“Where possible, deliveries should be effected early in the morning or after hours to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during normal business hours. The ZRP is appealing to heavy vehicle operators to use roads on the periphery of Harare Central Business District to avoid congesting the city.”

The ZRP ordered commuter omnibus drivers to pick and drop passengers at designated places.

“Commuter omnibus drivers are being urged to pick and drop passengers at allocated commuter ranks and to avoid the tendency of stopping at the centre of the road, going through red traffic lights and driving against one way,” said the police.

“They should not drive against one way or on pavements. Be on the lookout for pedestrians.”
