ZPCS agonises over vehicle breakdowns

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has failed to take prisoners to court for the past two days, blaming vehicles’ mechanical faults for the predicament.

Courts in Chitungwiza and Mbare have been affected the most by the problem.

ZPCS spokesperson Ms Elizabeth Banda said the vehicles that they are currently using were no longer fit for the purpose.

“The ZPCS cars are grounded because of mechanical faults and we have been trying to engage Government so that they provide funds to fix the situation but to no avail.

“We have decided that instead of placing the prisoners’ health at risk, we may as well ground the vehicles until there is change. This is because as much as they are prisoners, they are also Zimbabwean citizens with rights and we need to be humane with them,” she said.

Relatives of suspects held at Harare Central Remand Prison yesterday milled around the courts, anticipating to see their beloved ones, but to no avail.
