THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) last week officially adopted Pednor Primary School near Bindura and pledged to do everything possible to uplift the quality of education at the institution.

In his acceptance speech during the handover of the school with Bindura Rural District Council, Officer Commanding ZPCS in Mashonaland Central Province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Kenny Ndebele, said Pednor Primary School which will now be known as Pednor Prison Primary School is the first institution to come under the direct control of his organisation in the province.

He said he would do everything possible to help ease some of the challenges that the school was experiencing such as the shortage of classrooms, shortage of teachers’ houses, substandard admin block and reliable water supply. ‘‘The school is the first and only one that my organisation now directly controls in the province and ZPCS will do everything possible to uplift its quality of education.

‘‘Given the availability of cheap labour and the wider base of qualified human capital in my organisation, I promise to help ease some of the challenges that the school was experiencing,” he said. “Thus my organisation is open to advice and ideas to continue to improve the quality of education offered by the school. Together we will make our school one of the best and if not the best in Mashonaland Central.”

Mashonaland Central Provincial Education director, Mrs Naome Chikosha, said the coming in of ZPSC as the new responsible authority would add more value to the operations of Pednor Primary School and bring relief to Bindura Rural District Council as it was already taking care of many other schools.

She said ZPCS should be aware of the ministry’s expectations with particular reference to the demands of the competence based curriculum and the second republic by turning the school into a centre for optimal outcomers where every child is valued, supported and developed as per his/her individual needs.

Mrs Chikosha said it was the Ministry’s hope that Pednor Prison Primary School would be developed to such a level where it will be connected by 2020 in terms of ICT and have smart classrooms and become a model school in the farm community.
