ZOC names Munzwembiri as Beach Games boss Merit Munzwembiri

THE Zimbabwe Olympic Committee have appointed chair of the gender, equality inclusivity and diversity, Merit Munzwembiri, as chef de mission for the 2023 Beach Games to be held in Bali, Indonesia.

Munzwembiri, a seasoned sports journalist, will preside in the games and she is very pleased with the development and believes they will do well.

In a statement ZOC said they are happy to announce the appointment of Munzwembiri.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Merit Munzwembiri as the chef de mission to the Bali 2023 Beach Games. The 2023 Beach Games is an upcoming international multi-sport event which will be held in on the Island of Bali, Indonesia, from August 5 to 12 next year.

“Having successfully gone through the selection process, her confirmation was presented and confirmed by the ZOC board. Munzwembiri’s role will be to effectively manage the Zimbabwe, Bali 2023 Beach Games team before, during and after the games.

“It is in line with ZOC’s athletes’ development and support overall goal to ensure the team has well supported and adequately prepared so they perform optimally well at world level competition in 2025,” ZOC stated.

Munzwembiri said she is happy with the appointment and hope they will do well at the world championships.

“I am excited at having been appointed Chef De Mission for the 2023 Bali Beach games. It is a big celebration for me, personally, and for all women in sports as it is testament to our capabilities as women.

“I look forward to take up the assignment with so much zeal and to give nothing but the best. As Zimbabwe Olympic Committee we are looking at leveraging on our participation at these games to enhance our image and subsequently create a footprint that can build up the momentum towards Paris 2024 Olympics.

“Through the games I see abounding opportunities to grow beach sports in Zimbabwe which are easier to develop in places where there are no facilities. Every province has a dry river bed which we can use for beach games and we all need to start thinking along these lines and I hope it suffice,” said Munzwembiri.

Meanwhile, Special Olympic Zimbabwe athlete Barbara Njovo was elected in the Regional Athlete Leadership Council for 2023 to 2027.

Njovo won a gold medal in the 200m race at the 2019 Special Olympics Games in Japan.
