A ranger with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has appeared before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court for killing three lions in the Hwange National Park.
Mabuya Hali (39) is facing charges of contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act which prohibits the illegal hunting and killing of protected animals and for contravening the Firearms Act (unlawful possession of ammunition without a firearm certificate.
He was remanded in custody to November 1, 2024.
The court heard that on October 21, 2024 and at Hwange National Park, Hali who is employed by the Hwange National Park as a game ranger unlawfully killed three lions, one male and two females using a .458 riffle and went away unnoticed.
The following day, Hali approached his workmate who works in the armory section and requested her to change the dates when he returned the rifle.
The request by Hali raised some suspicions and an investigation was conducted.
It was discovered that Hali was in possession of 52 live rounds and 30 rounds of .458 which he had not been issued with by the employer and a spent .458 cartridge was recovered at the scene where the lion carcasses were found.
