ZIMBABWE recovered from their shattering loss to the West Indies to romp to a six-wicket win over Canada in an ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup plate championship quarter-final tie at Sheik Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground in Bangladesh’s port town of Cox’s Bazar.

Jeremy Ives starred with both bat and ball, claiming three wickets before his unbeaten knock of 43 helped take Stephen Mangongo’s charges – chasing 187 for victory – over the line in 31.4 overs.

Canada, who won the toss and chose to bat first, suffered an early blow when Bhavindu Adhihetty was dismissed for a duck only three balls into the match after he clipped Kundai Matigimu into the safe hands of Wesley Madhevere.

By the fourth over, their innings was already wobbling at 21 for two after Richard Ngarava trapped Thursaanth Anantharajah (11) leg before wicket.

The duo of Amish Taploo and Abraash Khan tried to steady the ship with a 56-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Taploo, who top-scored for Canada with 37, perished when he edged Zimbabwe captain Brandon Mavuta’s delivery to wicketkeeper Ryan Murray.

Sixteen balls later, Abraash Khan fell too when he was caught by Milton Shumba off the bowling of Ives to leave the innings tally at 128 for five wickets.

Ives piled more misery on Canada by claiming the wickets of Miraj Patel (five) and Arslan Khan (31).

Kurt Ramdath tried to make the total respectable with a contribution of 17 runs, while Abdul Haseeb and Sarbot Sivia finished unbeaten on 13 and two runs respectively.

In reply, Zimbabwe got their chase off at a canter, racing to 50 runs in seven overs without losing a wicket.

Opener Shaun Snyder scored his second consecutive half-century, knocking a steady 52 that provided a perfect platform for Zimbabwe to make short work of Canada.

His opening partner Madhevere was also going strong with the bat but was a little unlucky when he edged Adhihetty’s delivery to wicketkeeper Sivia, having mustered 31 runs off 32 balls.

Shlok Patel claimed the wickets of Murray (19) and Adam Keefe (eight) to put a dent on the innings, but Ives went on to boss the crease with an unbeaten 43 that together with William Mashinge’s unbeaten 24 comfortably took Zimbabwe over the line with 110 balls to spare.

The ninth place play-off battle continues with Zimbabwe facing South Africa in the plate semi-finals on Monday.
