THE Zimbabwe Handball Federation is on Saturday expected to hold a selection event for an Under-18 girls team as part of their vision 2024 project at the Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex.

The selection process will be led by Swiss coach Rolf Haussener, who is in the country for the men’s Under-21 camp that is running up to Sunday.

Haussener has been engaged by the national federation to help develop national teams that can compete at major events.

He will be working with Cleopatra Mareverwa and Emmaculate Matimbe, who were appointed as the girls team coach and manager respectively.

ZHF secretary-general Edison Chirowodza said they are hoping to have at least 15 to 20 players at the end of the selection.

“We have sent out communication to those that were shortlisted and those coming for trials for the first time. So they will be coming for selection.

“At the end of the selection we should at least have 15 to 20 girls.

“As part of our national team development strategy for women, we have started with the Under-18 girls knowing that by 2026 they go into the senior women handball team that will be able to qualify for the African Games.

“So that’s our goal, our vision and it’s clear. By 2026 we should reach the African Games. As such we are also looking forward to partners, those who are willing to work with us,” said Chirowodza.

ZHF started the project with the men’s team and they are now looking at establishing a women’s side.
