ZIMBABWE has thrown its full weight in support of next month’s 2022 Winter Olympics to be staged in Beijing, China.

The Games, which are set to be played in the backdrop of the difficult Covid-19 situation, also face the threat of boycotts by some countries over perceived “human rights issues” in the vast Asian country.

The People’s Republic of China has defied odds in responding to the global pandemic emerging as a global in its response through the manufacturing of response equipment like vaccines against the virus.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa pledged Zimbabwe’s support of China.

“The Zimbabwean Government gives its full support to China to host the Beijing 2022Winter Olympics, and opposes attempts by some countries to politicise the event.

“Sports should remain as sports and never be politicised,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

“Zimbabwe wishes China all the best, all the success in this Beijing Winter Olympics, which is being held under the shadow of the COVID-19, China is very good at handling pandemics.

“The upcoming Games’ success will be good for all the sports people who have trained, they would then be able to showcase the talent and the whole world will be glued to their television entertaining themselves,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
