A second batch with another 25 000 doses of the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine will arrive in the country within a month from Russia.

This was revealed by Alrosa Zimbabwe in a statement following the delivery of the first batch of 25 000 Sputnik V vaccines on Wednesday.

Delivery of the Sputnik V vaccines to the Health and Child Welfare Ministry was facilitated by Alrosa Zimbabwe, a joint venture between Alrosa and the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company.

“A member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, World Diamond Council and Natural Diamond Council, Alrosa is committed to the highest standards of social responsibility and complies with the strictest international industry standards,” said Alrosa deputy chief executive Mr Vladimir Marchenko.

“Supporting local communities in the regions where we operate in is one of our top priorities. Year by year, we support various social, environmental and charitable programmes in the regions where we operate.”

The Gam-COVID-Vac combined vector vaccine developed by the NF Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology with support from the Russian Direct Investment Fund was registered by the Russian Ministry of Health in August 2020.

The vaccine was named “Sputnik V” after the first Soviet space satellite that opened a new era in the global space research.

Each vaccine kit consists of two doses.
