A Zimbabwean volleyball player Tafadzwa Mapfumo (25) has joined a Rwandan team, Army Patriotic de Rwanda (APR) in Kigali.
Mapfumo, who has been playing for the Call Centre Volleyball Team, left the country yesterday to join the East African team where he will showcase his talent.
The youthful player has been playing volleyball for the past 8 years since 2016 when he was enrolled at Prince Edward School before joining Call Centre Volleyball Team.
Having shown his prowess in volleyball, Mapfumo is being sponsored by Call Centre’s founder and director Vengai Nyaude who bought his air ticket and training kit for his new journey. In an interview, Mapfumo said no words can explain how happy he was as he could not wait to fly the country’s flag high in Rwanda while inspiring local volleyball players. “I feel happy to be playing for a foreign team and I am very hopeful that I will advance my volleyball career while representing my country, Zimbabwe,” he said.
“I see a brighter future and my career is taking shape. I am very grateful to Call Centre which has been sponsoring my volleyball career since the beginning to where I am right now. “They sponsored my participation in the beach volleyball world tour in Rwanda in 2021 where I showcased my talent and lifted the country’s flag high. It was my first appearance in a foreign tournament but I managed to prove that I am a force to reckon with.”
Mapfumo promised to work to the best of his ability.
Nyaude said the joining of Mapfumo into APR should be an inspiration to young volleyball players across the country.
“I feel very happy for the young man because this will open opportunities for others who would want to join the Call Centre Volleyball Team.
“His going to Rwanda should not be the final destination but a door for him to go to Europe and play for international teams flying the country’s flag high.”
