ZIMBABWE has many things to offer to the world despite the negative publicity the country is getting from the West, outgoing Kuwait ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Abdullah Al-Sharhan has said. Speaking after bidding farewell to Acting President Joice Mujuru at her Munhumutapa offices in Harare yesterday, Ambassador Al-Sharhan described the July 31 elections resoundingly won by President Mugabe and Zanu-PF as a “smooth election”.

“It was a very smooth election. I think Zimbabwe has many things to offer not only to Arab countries but the world as a whole,” he said.

“What is not right and clear is the image portrayed outside. But to some of us who have been in the country, it has a lot to offer to the world – educated people, natural resources and agriculture. I think with more co-operation many people will come and see the real Zimbabwe.”
Ambassador Al-Sharhan, who leaves the country today, thanked Government for making him feel at home.

“I have been here for four years and I spent a good time,” he said. “It was not hard as Government did its best to help me accomplish my mission. I am leaving and going to Thailand but I will have good memories about Zimbabwe.”

He commended President Mugabe for standing by Kuwait when it was under invasion from Iraq.

“We have had good relations with Zimbabwe. President Mugabe helped us in 1990 when Zimbabwe was a member of the United Nations Security Council,” he said.

“He supported us and stood against that behaviour by Iraq. We also have had good economic relations and during that same period we helped Zimbabwe with six projects.”

Ambassador Al-Sharhan is confident that the forthcoming third Africa-Arab Summit in Kuwait next month will increase political and economic co-operation between Africa and the Arab world.

The summit runs from November 18-20.
He said co-operation between Africans and Arab countries should be found in all areas.

“Kuwait will host the summit and since Africa and Arabs have many things to offer, there would be more cooperation,” he said.

“I am optimistic that there will be new horizons and channels in terms of cooperation. Linking Africa with Arab countries in a very strong way is good for both sides. We have good relations with Africa already and such summits will help iron out any challenges and open new channels of co-operation between the two sides,” he said.

Ambassador Al-Sharhan said there was a need to support each other in times of crisis.
