THE 21st Zanu PF Annual People’s Conference will be more focused on the state of the economy, party and the welfare of the people with preparations for the indaba almost complete, Secretary-General Dr Obert Mpofu has said.
He said deliberations will also focus on the engagement and re-engagement drive to stimulate the growth of the economy.
The conference, to be held under the theme; “Industrialise, modernise towards Vision 2030”, will be held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair grounds in Bulawayo from October 22-27.
It presents an opportunity for the metropolitan province to demonstrate its capacity to host large-scale events and showcase its vibrancy.
Giving an update yesterday on preparations, Dr Obert Mpofu said there would be a reduced number of delegates participating at the conference.
“It is not everyone who will attend. It will be the Politburo, the Central Committee, the National Consultative Assembly, Provincial Executives and District Co-ordinating Committee members and organs of the party,” said Dr Mpofu.
He said President Mnangagwa wanted a more focused conference where people would attend to pressing issues.
“President Mnangagwa has always wanted leaner conferences with fewer delegates. Last year, almost 3 000 delegates attended the conference.
“The actual figures will be announced as we draw nearer to the conference. It will be a leaner delegation than before. We don’t want delegates who will lose focus on issues that are serious in terms of development,” said Dr Mpofu.
He said preparations for the conference were almost 95 percent complete with organisers under the guidance of National Chairman Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, receiving support from organs of the party.
“We are ready and resources are available. The venue is well prepared and food and accommodation are already in place for the conference.
“The national chairman is responsible for conferences, congresses and all national meetings that are conducted by the party.
“We are ready for the conference, especially following a meeting between the national chairman Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and the organising committee last week.
“Even if we were to call the conference tomorrow, we are ready to host the event,” said Dr Mpofu.
Cde Muchinguri-Kashiri convened the meeting in Bulawayo which included all the heads of departments who gave detailed reports on their readiness for the conference.
Dr Mpofu said each department would report on what they would be doing at the conference.
Most of the issues to be discussed would revolve around the implementation of Government programmes and policies.
“There will be new resolutions, but we will be looking at the resolutions that have been passed before at previous conferences and congresses.
“The Minister of State in the President’s Office Cde Lovemore Matuke has been moving around the country checking on progress on some of the projects that are being implemented.”
Dr Mpofu said there was a sense of urgency in delivering all the party’s manifesto pledges, adding that President Mnangagwa was attaching importance to a solid and galvanised party machinery.
