LONDON. — Yaya Toure is at the centre of a backlash from Manchester City fans for embracing Pep Guardiola following his side’s Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
TV cameras picked out Toure and Guardiola, who managed the City midfielder at Barcelona, smiling and talking in the immediate aftermath of Bayern’s last-gasp 1-0 win.
While the rest of City’s players trudged off the pitch in disconsolate mood following the agonising defeat, following a 90th-minute win from former Blue Jerome Boateng, Toure angered the travelling fans with his apparent indifference.
City fans took to Twitter to vent their anger against Toure, whose questionable post-match conduct compounded his poor display in the Allianz Arena, which raised questions about his commitment to the Premier League champions.
One City fan tweeted: “Yaya put more energy into hugging Pep after the game than he did during the game.”
Another City fan tweeted: “What’s with Yaya Toure laughing and joking with Pep at the end there?? Should have pulled ya finger out tonight instead!! Certainly not funny!!”
Toure was at the centre of controversy in the summer, when his agent accused City of showing the midfielder a lack of respect by refusing to acknowledge his birthday on a post-season trip to Abu Dhabi.
The absurd claim was seen as an attempt by Toure’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, to engineer a move or improved contract for his client, neither of which he achieved, with City standing firm in the face of the claims.
But Toure’s lacklustre display, coupled with his perceived non-chalance at the final whistle in the Allianz Arena, has raised the question of whether the 31-year-old is merely going through the motions at City. — The Mirror.
