Thupeyo Muleya Beitbridge Bureau
Prominent Beitbridge traditional chief, David Mbedzi Stauze, has urged Government to urgently attend to water and sanitation issues in the district.

In an interview yesterday, the traditional leader said access to potable water remained a major challenge for most people and livestock.

He said in areas where there are boreholes, they were either far away from the villagers or not functioning to capacity.

“As leaders we are worried about the water situation in most rural parts of the district and we are appealing to Government and its partners to drill more boreholes and repair existing ones to augment the deficit,” said Chief Stauze.

“Beitbridge is a livestock production area and water is one key aspects to the sustenance of livestock or irrigation projects and hence the issue should be attended to urgently.

“People are having challenges of accessing water beyond the rainy season.”

He said although Government and other development agencies have been repairing most boreholes they were not enough to cater for the growing population.

An estimated 100 000 people live in rural Beitbridge with a total of 1 146 registered boreholes.

Further, the district has close to 200 000 cattle, which rely on borehole water and other water bodies.

The Herald is reliably informed that there are 32 small dams in the district most of them are not holding much water as a result of siltation.
