LEADING waste management firm, Geo Pomona Waste Management (Pvt) Limited, is on cloud nine after clinching a prestigious Sustainability Innovation Champion award for its immense contribution to the sustainability of the environment.
The firm’s chief executive officer and executive chairman Mr Dilesh Nguwaya received the award from the Environment, Social, Governance Network Zimbabwe (ESGNZ).
This year’s awards were running under the theme: “ESG Champions: Pioneering Sustainable Development.” They were celebrated at the Harare International Conference Centre.
The recognition of Geo Pomona Waste Management serves as a clear testament of its efforts in long-term and sustainable environmental solutions through innovative technology which is creating waste-to-energy plants.
Mr Nguwaya said the award was recognition of Geo-Pomona Waste Management’s innovative thrust to waste management.
“Our corporate social responsibility mandate compliance also facilitated the conferment of this prestigious honour. The award signals the work ahead in fast-tracking our deliverables following the commissioning of our site by President Mnangagwa on November 6.
“The award is also instructive of the need for corporates to adopt sustainability anchored initiatives. This augments the global clarion call to environmental justice and our company is playing its part in that regard,” he said.
Geo Pomona was demonstrating the value of human health over unsustainable pro-profit corporate behaviours which must not be condoned under whatever circumstances.
“True to that conviction we are now partners of the Museum of African Liberation in its waste management project at the Golden Quarry Dumping Site.
“So we are ready to transform the former dumping site into a sterling tourist attraction centre. We are expanding our horizon to ensure that waste mismanagement is carried through in every part of Zimbabwe,” Mr Nguwaya said.
The Golden Quarry site was the first waste management site in Harare to house recreational facilities and a restaurant.
In an advisory to Geo Pomona, ESGNZ said it applauded and appreciated the organisation’s efforts in championing sustainability innovation and use of clean renewable energy in Zimbabwe.
Award winners were mobilised from the diverse sectors and industries which have created positive impact towards Zimbabwe’s sustainable development and the promotion of Government’s Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals.
