The freedom fighters also praised the Head of State and Government for recognising Masvingo by giving key ministerial portfolios to people from the province.

Mines and Mining Development Minister Cde Winston Chitando and Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Amon Murwira, who are both members of the Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial executive were re-appointed Cabinet ministers by President Mnangagwa. Addressing members of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association provincial council here, the association’s provincial chair Cde Tendeukai Chinooneka said war veterans here were confident that Zimbabwe was poised for good times.

Cde Chinooneka said the configuration of President Mnangagwa’s Cabinet showed that he was serious about changing the economic trajectory.

“We want to congratulate our President Cde ED Mnangagwa for appointing a leaner and vibrant Cabinet with a focus on economic renewal and we are very optimistic that Zimbabwe is headed for good times economically,” he said.

“As war veterans in Masvingo we want to make it very clear that we have full confidence that President Mnangagwa and his team will deliver a middle income economy in Zimbabwe by 2030.”

The Masvingo war veterans’ leader hailed the ruling party for a good showing in the July 30 harmonised elections though the ruling party swept all but one of the 26 National Assembly seats in the province.

He said Masvingo province polled 330 763 total votes for Zanu-PF, which was arguably the highest garnered by the ruling party countrywide in the last harmonised elections.

“As war veterans we also want to single out Chiredzi and Mwenezi districts for a good performance in terms of votes received by the party and we are happy that unity and discipline was the cornerstone of that splendid showing.”

Cde Chinooneka also urged Zanu PF cadres not to lose focus in the struggle to maintain Zanu-PF’s political dominance saying the ruling party should draw lessons from the way party internal polls and finally harmonised elections were conducted this year.

“As war veterans we should continue to mobilise voters for our President Cde Mnangagwa and our revolutionary party Zanu-PF. We should continue to work tirelessly to defend the victory of our President and party in the just-ended elections but let me emphasize that unity and discipline is the cornerstone of that defence.”

The Masvingo war veterans chair said the country’s changing demographic pattern characterised by the emergence of new young voters called for the ruling party to intensify public lectures and workshops targeting youths and students in tertiary institutions to inculcate in them values about the country’s liberation struggle and the need for Zimbabweans to be masters of their own destiny in a world threatened by neo-imperial forces.
