Chivi Rural District Council chairperson councillor Killer Zivhu has donated 25 beasts to war veterans in the district towards the 38th independence celebrations on April 18.

Cllr Zivhu also handed over 36 sets of drip irrigation equipment to 36 primary schools in Chivi district at a function at his homestead on Monday.

The drip irrigation equipment would be used for nutritional gardens that would ensure schools give supplementary feeding to pupils.

Cllr Zivhu said this year’s independence celebrations were going to be unique due to the new dispensation led by President Mnangagwa.

He said in Chivi South, the celebrations were going to be done at bases used by liberation fighters, so as to relive experiences of the liberation strug- gle.

“I have sourced resources towards this year’s independence celebrations,” said Clr Zivhu.

“I have 25 heads of cattle that are ready for collection by war veterans who will lead the celebrations in Chivi South.”

Cllr Zivhu said villagers were not going to travel long distances, as the celebration venues would be at former war bases in their villages.

“We do not want anyone to walk more than two kilometres to the independence celebrations venue,” he said.

“This year’s independence will be a unique one, as we are in a new dispensation led by our new President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“We want to have independence with a difference here in Chivi South and it is the war veterans who should lead the celebrations. We want villagers to relive the liberation war period experiences as a way of helping the young ones know the history of this country.”

Cllr Zivhu called on war veterans to help in telling the young generations about how the country attained independence. He said the war veterans were the vanguard of Zanu-PF and should be seen playing instrumental roles in making sure that the country’s sovereignty was jealously guarded.

Cllr Zivhu invited other political parties to take part in the independence celebrations, saying national events were for all citizens despite one’s political persuasion.

Provincial celebrations are slated for Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo where Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Senator Josaya Hungwe is expected to read the President’s speech.

On the nutritional gardens, Cllr Zivhu said his attention had be drawn to the need to have a healthy population, starting with the young people.

“The nutritional gardens will go a long way in ensuring that there is supplementary feeding for the school pupils to maintain their health, hence ensuring their minds are also healthy and sharp,” he said.
