Chitungwiza Municipality has said its only traffic light which was vandalised last month during the violent protests organised by the MDC-Alliance and its affiliates was worth $50 000.

Chitungwiza public relations officer Mr Lovemore Meya said the destruction was costly to the local authority.

“It is quite disappointing that the only traffic light we had in our town situated at Unit C junction was completely destroyed by some hooligans last month during the recent protests,” he said.

“Only a supporting metal of the traffic light was recovered by the police, but the total value of the light is $50 000.”

Mr Meya condemned the wild behaviour exhibited by the protesters and urged residents to act responsibly.

“No matter the circumstances, residents should desist from destroying council properties since the aftermath will see them having to pay in a way,” he said.

“We urge residents to think and act responsibly always.”

The local authority is considering to replace and install more traffic lights at proposed intersections of Tilcor and Chitungwiza Road, C Junction and at CA in St Mary’s.
