Music lovers had a rare treat on Saturday night at Mutangadura Hideout when Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi shared the stage with Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria. The two seasoned artistes, who have over 60 years of experience between them, performed to expectations at the outdoor venue.First to hit the stage was Madzibaba aka “The Senior Lecturer” to his fans who serenaded music lovers with his pulsating beats.

Madzibaba maintained the tempo  making sure the crowd was on its feet throughout his first set. Even the “Stockbirds”, as his dancers are lovingly called, delighted the crowd with a fine delivery on stage.

Backed by his group The Khiama Boys, Madzibaba then took a break to make way for Tuku and the Black Spirits. This time Tuku had a full band comprising bassist Enoch Piroro, drummer Sam Mataure, Strovers Maswobe on percussion, Maxwell Chiwara on guitar and Munyaradzi Vhayi on keyboards.

As is always with Tuku he started off on a low tempo before he went a gear up mixing some of his new and old songs. You could see that the lanky singer was having a great time despite his tight schedule which also saw him performing in Bulawayo over the weekend.

He criss-crossed the stage and wowed the crowd with his katekwe dance. Love or hate him, Tuku still commands the respect of his fans and his crowd control was amazing.

Mataure, who also doubles as Tuku’s manager, said they had a great time sharing the stage with Madzibaba.
“I think he’s (Madzibaba) a great guy with a powerful band. His performance was good and he brought a lot of energy on stage,” he said.
Tuku has lined up a mega concert this Friday at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Dubbed “Tribute to Oliver Mtukudzi”, the concert will be graced by Zimbabwean and international performing artistes in the mould of Steve Dyer, Hugh Masekela and Judith Sephuma, all from South Africa.
