Three boys from Beatrice have been sentenced to nine years in jail each for trying to sell pangolin scales worth $5 000.
Malvin Manuel (22), Tatenda Wine (18) and Vincent Mundoko (18) were convicted on their own plea of guilty when they appeared before Chitungwiza resident magistrate Mrs Yeukai Chigodora charged with breaching the Parks and Wildlife Act, specifically being found in possession of protected species.
During the trial, the three said they just found the scales in the bush and decided to sell them.
The State led by Mr Norman Koropi proved that on September 3, a detective from Minerals and Boarder Control Unit, Harare, received information that the accused persons were in possession of pangolin scales.
Acting on the information, three detectives proceeded to Joy Mine compound posing as potential buyers and met Manuel.
