Widows and relatives of fallen heroes and heroines interred at Midlands Provincial Heroes Acre have hailed a local property development company, River Valley Properties, for providing flowers for the 218 graves at the shrine.

The company also made this year’s Heroes celebrations in the Midlands unique by providing grocery hampers and food vouchers to relatives of the heroes and heroines buried at the provincial shrine.

In an interview yesterday, Gweru District War Veterans’ Association chairperson Cde Tambainashe Masiya, who coordinated the programme, said they were happy with the gesture.

“We all know that we have economic challenges in the country, but in spite of that, we had a company which donated flowers for every grave of hero or heroine buried at the provincial shrine. It was a very important gesture and on top of that the widows and relatives of those buried at the shrine were given grocery hampers and it was surely a Heroes celebration to remember,” he said.

Cde Masiya said the company also donated lunch vouchers on the day which the widows and relatives redeemed at a local fast food outlet.

“It was a day when we celebrated the lives of those who sacrificed for the independence of this country and in the Midlands we are happy that we have companies who remember the sacrifices that were made,” he said.

River Valley Properties chief executive Dr Smelly Dube said the company would be making the donations every year.

She said the company will next year extend the donations to districts.

“We joined the nation and our President in commemorating this very important day on our calendar and we remembered our heroes by buying some flowers for all the graves at the shrine.

“We donated some groceries to the widows and this has been the norm by the company every year.

“We are, however, planning to extend this to districts and this year, we also donated the same flowers and grocery hampers to Shurugwi and Gokwe districts,” she said.
