More than 100 trainee journalists from the Christian College of Southern Africa will this week visit Chivi District for an academic familiarisation tour of Zim-Asset development projects in the area.

The students are also expected to compile magazine stories on the projects in the rural district. In an interview, Chivi Rural District Council chairman Cde Killer Zivhu confirmed the programme. Cde Zivhu, who is also the Zanu-PF provincial secretary for finance, said the proposed three-day tour would target Zim-Asset projects in the district.

“The Christian College of Southern Africa has engaged Chivi rural district authorities so that their journalism interns tour projects in Chivi and come up with stories for the already existing magazine. The practical and hands-on experience is vital for acquainting the students with knowledge on magazine writing on developmental stories,” he said.

Cde Zivhu said projects in the district included command fisheries, irrigation, mushroom growing, poultry and housing. The projects have uplifted the lives of many villagers in the district, he said. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Liaising on Psycho-motor Activities in Education Josaya Hungwe has commended Cde Zivhu for helping villagers in Chivi District.

“Zivhu is the man of the moment,” he said. “He was sent by God to better the lives of people in Chivi through charity work and lucrative development projects.”

Cde Zivhu apparently sits on various economic development boards and was recently elected Zimbabwe Local Government Association chairman. The Chivi Zim-Asset magazine has been instrumental in promoting development in line with Government’s national economic blueprint.

Several trainee students in the field of journalism from local universities and colleges, including Great Zimbabwe University and Midlands State University have on many occasions, benefited through contributing stories to the Chivi Zim-Asset magazine. Under the Chivi Zim-Asset programme, Cde Zivhu has spearheaded the rehabilitation of roads, schools, dams and clinics in the district.

He has also been instrumental in the establishment of several income generating projects, such as irrigation schemes, fisheries and market gardening.
