Traditionalists from across the country on Friday gathered at Moffat Hall in Mutare, where they exchanged notes on how to combat Tuberculosis (TB).

The meeting was held ahead of the World TB Day, which is commemorated on March 24 every year.

Members of the Traditional Medical Practitioners Council and some private health institutions attended the meeting, which also attracted members of the public.

Zimbabwe National Practitioners Association (ZINPA) founder and president Mr Friday Chisanyu said they found it befitting to gather as traditionalists since they had a role to play in fighting TB.

“We have discovered that TB is one of the diseases that is bedevilling communities in this country and we decided to gather here in Mutare, as we also commemorate the World TB Day,” he said.

Mr Chisanyu said their objective was to share information on how communities could fight TB.

He said little was being done to disseminate information on disease, especially in societies where clinical medicines were scarce.

“We have noted that a lot of people have died because they had little knowledge about TB. There is very little that is being done in sharing information in all societies regarding TB,” said Mr Chisanyu.

“Some people might not be keen on using clinical medicines, while others are forced to stop using such medicines by traditional practitioners. The objective is to fight the disease either using traditional or scientific methods.

“Our aim is to encourage people to get treatment and educate people on the symptoms so that they can be quickly treated,” he said.

Chief Zimunya, who was being represented by his aide Mr Never Chikunda, thanked members of the ZINPA for their initiative, saying it would go a long way in fighting TB.

“This is a noble idea as it promotes health in societies.

“This is one way of making sure that we have a healthy nation and traditional practitioners who are keen on fighting TB and other related diseases,” he said.

Headman Chitiyo also attended the meeting.
