Zanu PF chief whip Cde Pupurai Togarepi has challenged Members of Parliament to act as vital cogs of information dissemination against the spread Covid-19 in their respective constituencies.

Legislators are expected to be actively involved in the fight against Covid-19 by serving as the link between Government and their constituencies.

The Government has put in place a Covid-19 task-force responsible for monitoring the situation, managing the response to the outbreak of the pandemic and identifying gaps for corrective action across all the provinces.

Most people in rural areas were finding it difficult to adapt to Covid-19 regulations and Members of Parliament are expected to educate people from the grassroots on Covid-19, while assisting the needy in their respective constituencies.

In an interview, Cde Togarepi said legislators had been working with community leaders to ensure social distancing and management of social gatherings.

“The main target areas have been disseminating of vital information, donation of sanitisers, soaps and equipment such as infrared thermometers to hospitals and clinics,” he said. “MPs have been the link between the Government and their constituencies.”

The legislators are expected to contribute $1 000 each towards the fight against Covid-19.

“We are expecting MPs to raise $200 000 towards Covid-19,” said Togarepi.

“Almost all our MPs contributed. We will check with the bank on the exact amount raised so far. A handover ceremony is being organised through the Speaker’s office.”

The main aim was to support the Government’s effort in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We expect the raised money to be disbursed to the priority areas chosen by the national task-force,” said Cde Togarepi. “We do not doubt the transparency of our Government, so members are confident that their contribution will be effectively distributed in areas strategic for the Covid-19 fight.”
