Police have arrested three suspected armed robbers believed to be part of a gang that has been terrorising and robbing people of cash and cellphones in and around Harare after offering them lifts.

The trio was arrested by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide last night.

They are still detained at Harare Central Police Station and are assisting police with investigations and will appear in court once investigations have been completed.

Following the arrests, police have so far recovered more than 12 cell phones. Their getaway car, a Toyota Corolla was also impounded.

Police have since called on members of the public who were robbed by the trio in and around the city to contact officers at CID Homicide Section and assist with investigations.

Last month, two Harare women were robbed and raped in separate incidents after being offered lifts by armed robbers in unregistered Toyota Wish vehicles while a Bulawayo motorist lost nearly US$16 000 to an unknown thief after his vehicle had developed a mechanical fault.

Another Harare man was also robbed by robbers using a Toyota Wish and there were reports that robbery gangs offering lifts are active in Harare.
