Josiah Tungamirai Airbase in Gweru is seeking $230 000 to upgrade Thornhill Airbase Secondary School, which was opened in 2016.

The school, which started enrolling two years ago, has a total of 172 pupils up to Form Three, 12 classrooms and two administration blocks.

Of the 172 pupils, 80 are boys, while 92 are girls.

Josiah Tungamirai Airbase Base Commander, Group Captain Elisha Masakadza said they were in the process of upgrading the learning standards and the school, hence the need for the $230 000.

“We need about $70 000 for science laboratories, tiles, computers and the computer laboratories,” he said. “We also need $50 000 for the sports facilities, another $70 000 for new classroom blocks and $40 000 for the precast wall to secure the school.”

Group Captain Masakadza said there were plans of setting up Advanced Level at the school and they would require more infrastructure and learning materials.

He said the Air Force institution had approached the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to deploy more teachers to the school to ensure that it met the recommended teacher-pupil ratio.

“We want to construct two new classroom blocks at the school, which will accommodate our Advanced Level students,” said Group Captain Masakadza.

“We are going to have a golf tournament on the 24th of March to try and help us raise the required amount. We are also appealing to the corporate world and well-wishers to assist us raise the money.”
