Harare’s Theatre in the Park is set to host a one-woman play titled ‘Molly Street’ from September 18 to 20.
Actress Chido Joan Tenga features as Molly in the play depicting crimes of passion.
It was written and directed by Peter Churu while Patrick Tembo provided the soundtrack.
According to the synopsis of “Molly Street”, Churu’s play was set in the early 1960s on a sugar plantation in Chiredzi.
Tragedy strikes when an insecure boyfriend kills Molly, who was a sex worker.
At that point, the supernatural meets the natural as Molly’s avenging spirit returns after her death.
In an interview, Churu said his play was inspired by a story he read in a local newspaper.
“I was fascinated by the story of Peggy who was a legend when I grew up in Highfield,” he said.
“In Chiredzi, Molly was a sex worker and the local authority named a street after her.
“That set me on a journey to research and discovery, that is how Molly was conceptualised.”
Churu also highlighted the need to promote theatre.
“It is our responsibility as thespians. The theatre will only be as good as the plays we produce,” he said.
