Zimbabweans have applauded Government following delivery of Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccines from China yesterday.

The 200 000 Covid-19 vaccine doses, which were donated by the People’s Republic of China arrived in the country aboard an Air Zimbabwe charter flight early yesterday morning.

Being the first country in SADC to vaccinate its people, the Covid-19 vaccines will help in reducing the infection rate in the country as well as deaths.

The vaccines are expected to cover over 100 000 people with each person receiving two jabs. Frontline workers and elderly people with underlying conditions will get first priority.

Mr Milson Sere of Mabvuku high density suburb in Harare welcomed the vaccines saying he hopes this marks the first step to the country returning to normalcy.

“We thank our President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the minister of Health and Child Care Vice President Cde Constantino Chiwenga for their love and care as they managed to join hands with our friends China in acquiring the Covid-19 vaccines for the sake of saving our lives,” said Mr Sere.

Ms Angeline Jiri of Harare also welcomed the delivery of vaccines saying they will compliment other existing non- pharmaceutical methods such as hand washing, sanitisation, social distancing in the prevention of Covid-19.

“We really need those vaccines because we have seen our children being immunised from other diseases such as measles and they survived. We want our children to go back to school safely that’s why we want them vaccinated,” she said.

Community Water Alliance (CWA) communications officer, Christopher Gohori, said the vaccines will compliment other efforts made by the Government in fighting Covid-19.

“As CWA we are fighting for safer zones in communities and health is a major priority. The provision of vaccines and enough resources especially clean and safe water for sanitation services will help in reducing the disease burden in the country,” he said.
