Two teenagers, 18-year-old dancer, Tanaka Lionel Roki and 19-year-old beat boxer and dancer, Denzel “Probeatz” Mashonganyika are set to tour Germany together with other local artistes for a Zimbabwean theatre project.
Roki was selected last year in December at a dance audition which had about 30 contestants. Probeatz’s beat boxing abilities got him into the production.
“I was really happy when my name was called out because I have been dancing and preparing for such a huge opportunity for seven years. We are leaving for Germany on the 1st of November.” Roki said.
The two will be part of the Zimbabwean team which comprise National Arts Merit Awards 2014 outstanding actor Tafadzwa Hananda and NAMA 2014 Outstanding Female Dancer Meylene Chenjerai in a theatrical play called TWENTYFIFTEEN! which will be a blend of theatre, music and dance performances.
“I am very happy to be part of a team of professional artists like Tafadzwa Hananda and ProBeatz who have been in the industry for a long time and I will be showcasing my dancing and acting talent. This is definitely going to help me develop my dancing and beat boxing techniques.” ProBeatz said.
“This cultural exchange program is going to transform me into a better dancer through spending time with experienced artistes, sharing different cultures and attending lessons.
I am also hoping to get a scholarship to a dance school through this program to learn more about dancing and acting.” Roki said.
One of the actors, Tafadzwa Hananda said that the play is about a young lady who comes to Zimbabwe to find her identity; she meets two guys from different backgrounds as she tries to experience the life of a normal Zimbabwean.
Seventeen artists from Zimbabwe, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Uganda will collaborate on the event each bringing in a unique aspect of their diverse cultures in the art-forms of dance, song, acting, beat-boxing and a variety of musical instruments.
Roki also scooped a gold medal for the best Hip Hop New School dancer at the Jibilika Solo Dance Competition held at the Book Café on October 18.
