Tanzania to translate all English-written laws into Kiswahili

DAR ES SALAAM. — Tanzania’s Attorney General has said that the government was in the process of translating all Tanzanian laws written in English into Kiswahili, the national language, to enable more people to understand the laws.

Adelardus Kilangi, Wednesday told the National Assembly in the capital Dodoma that the process to translate the laws into Kiswahili has begun with great precaution.

However, Kilangi said the undertaking was facing two major challenges of poor funding and lack of enough and qualified translators. The attorney general was responding to a lawmaker’s question why the government continued to table in Parliament bills written in English, regardless of the fact that majority Tanzanians did not understand English. The lawmaker said continued enactment of laws in English defied President John Magufuli’s efforts to promote Kiswahili as the national language. – Xinhua
