Six suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in Mashonaland East Province, an official has said.

Of the six suspected cases, three were reported in Marondera, while Murehwa, Seke and Wedza reported a case each.

In an interview with The Herald, Mashonaland East provincial epidemiology and disease control officer Dr Paul Matsvimbo said out of the six suspected cases, two have been confirmed positive.

“We started receiving suspected reports of cholera on Friday evening and as of today (Tuesday), six suspected cases in the province have been reported,” Dr Matsvimbo said.

“Out of the six suspected cases, two have been confirmed to be cholera infections.”

Dr Matsvimbo said investigations done so far show that all the cases reported are linked to Harare.

“All the cases so far are linked to an earlier cholera outbreak in Harare, they did not originate within this province.

“One of the patients admitted in Wedza Hospital actually stays in Glen View, he had gone to Wedza for work.

“The one admitted in Murehwa has also travelled from Glen View, so these cases are directly linked with Harare,” he said.

Dr Matsvimbo said those admitted are responding positively to treatment and his staff will work tirelessly to make sure the situation remains under control.

“The admitted are responding well to treatment, our teams have since visited their homes and disinfected them to stop new infections.

“We are doing public awareness campaigns on this issue and our teams will ensure the situation remains under control,” he said.

He advised people to practice personal hygiene and help to stop the spread of the deadly disease.

“People should always practice personal hygiene, which among others, includes the washing of hands after using the toilet and before taking any food, wash fruits thoroughly before eating them.

“Everyone should play a part to stop the spread of cholera,” he said.
