State assisted funeral for Cde Yambira Dr Obert Mpofu

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has conferred liberation war hero status and accorded a State-assisted funeral to the late deputy director in the Protective and Security Inspectorate, Cde Sanford Morgan Yambira.

Cde Yambira, whose Chimurenga name was Morgan Hondo, died on Wednesday at Westend Hospital in Harare after a long illness and will be buried tomorrow at Plot number 1 Charfield Farm, Darwendale, Mashonaland West Province.

He was 62.

ZANU-PF Secretary for Administration Cde Obert Mpofu confirmed the developments.

“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU-PF, Cde E.D Mnangagwa has conferred liberation war hero status and accorded a State-assisted funeral to the late Cde Stanford Morgan Yambira who died on August 14, 2019 and he will be buried Charfield Farm in Mashonaland West Province,” he said

Cde Yambira was born on August 9, 1957 in Lomagundi, Mashonaland West Province, where he did the first four years of his primary education before moving to Manicaland where he completed his primary education before enrolling for his secondary education.

Whilst pursuing his secondary education studies, Cde Yambira left school for Mozambique through Villa Katandika entry point to join the armed liberation struggle as a Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) freedom fighter.

He was in the same year deployed to Doroi Refugee Camp.

He received his initial military training in 1977 at Takawira Two in Chimoio before he was sent to Tanzania for further training at Nachingweya Base.

In 1979 he came back to Zimbabwe and operated in Mavonde area and after independence, Cde Yambira joined the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) where he served until June 1981.

He became one of the first ex-combatants to be integrated into the police force.

He was later to join the President’s Department in 1981 as a security aide under the then Close Security Unit (CSU) where he and others were the building blocks that formed the core of what is now known as the Security Branch.

He was deployed to the late Vice-President Simon Muzenda’s section as head of the section.

The late Cde Yambira quickly came to grips with the requirements of his duties and began to prove his intrinsic value to the organisation and in January 1983, he was promoted to the rank of Senior Security Aide and in July 1984 he was again promoted to the rank of Principal Security Aide where he served with commendable loyalty and dedication.

He was later promoted to the rank of Chief Security Aide in 1988, and later Senior Chief Security Aide in 1991.

In 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Principal Chief Security Aide where he was heading most key sections in the Security Branch’s CSU wing where he left a legacy of discipline, hard work and professionalism.

On April 1, 2018 Cde Yambira was promoted to the rank of deputy director Government Protective and Security Inspectorate, a position he held at the time of his untimely death.
