The Special Olympics Zimbabwe team which had been in camp over the weekend is set to leave the country today for the World Summer Games in Los Angles, United States.

The team of 15 athletes went into camp on Saturday as they fine-tuned their preparations ahead of the world’s biggest gathering in sport for people with intellectual and learning disabilities.

Zimbabwe missed at the last edition of the International Special Olympics Games in Greece, Athens in 2011 because there was no functional board to run SOZ but efforts have been made to field a team this time around.

In 2007, Zimbabwe sent 19 athletes to the Games in Shanghai, China where they took part in bocce, golf, athletes and swimming and collected more than 16 medals.

Now Zimbabwe have restricted to fielding athletes in golf and athletes only because of a constrained budget which has even seen delegation being revised.

Seasoned athletics coach Owen Makaruwa will take charge of the athletics team while Roger Baylis will help the golf team.

Head of Team Zimbabwe’s delegation Viola Musariri said the team had been using the University of Zimbabwe track for athletics training while the golfers were at Royal Harare.

There will be send off for the team in Harare before their departure for the airport shortly before mid-day for the Games that start on July 25 and will end on August 2.
