Six people died while 15 others were injured in two separate accidents that occurred on Monday and Tuesday.

In the first accident, two women and a little boy died, while nine other passengers were injured when their Toyota Hiace kombi rolled several times before landing on its roof at the 237km peg along the Harare-Mutare Highway on Monday after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The dead were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare, where their bodies are awaiting post-mortem. The injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Police said the kombi, which was travelling towards Harare, had 12 passengers on board at the time of the accident.

The dead have been identified as Enerita Jongwe (25) and Hazvinei Mawadzi (31) of Mutudza Village under Chief Marange in Mutare, and Blessing Mutudza, a 3-year-old boy from Madzengwa Village under Marange. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police were concerned over the surge in fatal road traffic accidents on the country’s major highways “due to speeding and overtaking errors”.

Meanwhile, three other people died while six others were seriously injured when a Honda Fit side-swiped a haulage truck on the 94km peg along the Harare-Chirundu highway on Tuesday.

The Honda Fit veered off the road and landed on its wheels in a ditch.

The deceased were ferried to Banket Hospital Mortuary while the injured are at the same hospital receiving treatment.

Asst Comm Nyathi said the haulage truck was heading in the direction of Harare while the Honda Fit was heading towards Chirundu.

He said on approaching the 94km peg, the driver of the Honda Fit encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic resulting in his vehicle involved in a side-swipe with the haulage truck, a Scania 420. Asst Comm Nyathi said names of the deceased are yet to be identified and the bodies are at Banket Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.
