First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, through her philanthropic organisation Angel of Hope Foundation, has donated food hampers to over 250 households in Bulawayo’s Magwegwe suburb.

Amai Mnangagwa has been supporting the elderly women from the suburb and helped them to establish the Mama and Child Garden to cushion them during tough times. 

Speaking after the handover on behalf of Amai Mnangagwa, Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister Raj Modi said the country was proud to have such a motherly figure who always went out of her way to help the vulnerable. 

“We once came here for the ground-breaking ceremony for the fish pond project with the mother of the nation,” he said. “She has done a wonderful job and given hope to many families who are struggling during these Covid-19 times.

“The work that the First Lady is doing makes the nation feel comfortable knowing that she is there for the needy and vulnerable. We are grateful as people of Bulawayo for the donation.”

Bulawayo Senator, Cde Molly Mpofu, praised the First Lady for constantly showing love to the people of Magwegwe. 

“When we started this garden, she supported us by empowering us with all farming inputs and today she has donated groceries to us,” said Cde Mpofu. “We are happy that she remembers our elderly and has given them food hampers which will go a long way in ensuring they have something to eat.” 

Cde Mpofu said the area which has been turned into a garden was once a haven for thieves who waylaid people in that bush.

“As women from this Magwegwe community, we decided to utilise the place and came up with the idea of community gardening,” she said. “This was after we had seen the First Lady going around uniting people and uplifting women with empowerment projects.”
