SOUTH Africa this week presented to the Zimbabwe Embassy interim details of their findings in the case in which an official was shot and killed by a police officer in Pretoria, as investigations continue. In an interview yesterday, Zimbabwean ambassador to South Africa Cde Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday confirmed the developments. “We have sent all the findings to the ministry of Foreign Affairs in Harare,” he said.

Ambassador Mphoko could not divulge the details of the findings, referring all questions to the secretary for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Joey Bimha. Sources yesterday said on Monday Ambassador Mphoko had a meeting with his South African counterpart were he was briefed about the investigations they had carried out so far concerning the death of Mr Lucky Hakueri (37).

Ambassador Bimha recently said they had presented the case to the ministry of Foreign Affairs in South Africa to investigate the matter. Efforts to get comment from Ambassador Bimha yesterday were fruitless.

One of Hakueri’s close friends, Mr Chamu Motsi, said the South African Police said they were still investigating the matter.
“They said they are still investigating the matter but it is worrisome to note that they have not yet opened up the case,” he said.

He said they were also waiting for Mr Hakueri’s wife, Ms Sarah Sande, to come back to the neighbouring country so that she would hire a lawyer and pursue the matter.

The South African Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Mr Moses Dlamini confirmed to the South African media that investigations on the case had started. He said preliminary investigations indicated that police went to a housing estate in Lynnwood, Pretoria, to investigate robberies, and while about to question possible suspects, the two men tried to escape. Plain-clothes officers in an unmarked car shot at them, killing one and wounding the other.

Officials from the Zimbabwean embassy have also approached the police for an explanation of what prompted the shooting.
