Runde Rural District Council has appealed to Government to speedily approve a set of new by-laws proposed by council to curb rampant environmental degradation in the district.

Council says it is hamstrung to deal with a plethora of illegal activities in the district such as wanton logging of trees, stream bank cultivation and invasion of wet lands because there were no by-laws that empowered them to arrest the situation.

Runde RDC chairperson Councillor Norman Sibanda yesterday said they were concerned with the proliferation of illegal human activities that were taking their toll on the environment.

He said they were still waiting for Government to approve the proposed by-laws aimed at curbing environmental degradation.

‘’We are failing to deal with problems such as wanton cutting down of trees, stream bank cultivation and invasion of wet lands because we don’t have powers to stop that,” said Cllr Sibanda.

“Our hands are tied until such a time we have by-laws that empower us to deal with the problems,” said Clr Sibanda.
