Chitungwiza ratepayers, pensioners and workers on Monday petitioned the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing over poor governance and service delivery in the dormitory town.

The group also invited Minister July Moyo or his deputy to come and address stakeholders on issues bedevilling Chitungwiza Municipality.

In an interview, a residents and workers’ representative Reverend Ephraim Katsina said they approached Minister Moyo after the local authority failed to address service delivery issues affecting them.

“We have submitted our petition at the ministry where we are calling upon him to come and meet with residents and workers of Chitungwiza Municipality at a date convenient to him,” he said.

“Service delivery is deteriorating every day since 2012 and we have tried to engage council officials, particularly the Town Clerk, Dr George Makunde, and human resources head Mrs Mary Mukonyora, but to no avail.”

According to the residents, they sought to know what happened to the $1,5 million that was allegedly withdrawn from the council’s investment account by former town clerk Mr Godfrey Tanyanyiwa and his administration.

Council is failing to collect refuse regularly in most suburbs and residents experience persistent sewer bursts, which expose them to water-borne diseases.

The council allocated residential stands in Unit N, O and P Extension which have gone for over 10 years without running water.

“We have a poor road network yet council has been receiving money from Zinara,” said Rev Katsina. “There are missing files at Chitungwiza area offices and the head office and it has affected many former employees who are not able to get their terminal benefits.

“There is also a computer drive that went missing with information on salaries and arrears. This is the reason why some workers have been deprived of their salary arrears.”

Rev Katsina, who is also the president of Chitungwiza Municipal Workers’ Union, said many retired council workers were languishing in poverty.
