Public toilets closing times a worry

Harare City Council should consider extending operating hours for its public toilets, particularly those at terminuses in the Central Business District, most of which close at 4pm when passengers are still queuing.

This has seen some passengers relieving themselves in alleys.

When The Herald visited some of the terminuses, there were containers filled with urine and human waste that were dumped.

The few toilets that close late such as the one at Market Square are not user friendly because they are dirty.

Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (Paz) president Tafadzwa Goliati expressed concern over the situation.

“The most affected are the women because unlike men who can relieve themselves easily, they require more privacy,” he said.

A woman only identified as Mai Delon urged council to consider operating the toilets 24 hours.

Council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme yesterday said they welcomed the suggestion.
