The effects of Cyclone Idai that ravaged the continent this month have been nothing short of devastating, leaving countless lives lost and displaced across Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Most of the survivors, while mourning the deceased, are in desperate need of food, shelter, clothing and many other necessities.

It is in the spirit of oneness that Proplastics has donated $50,000 RTGS through the National Civil Protection Department towards relief efforts for victims of the cyclone within the country.

“We know that a lot needs to be done and we hope our donation will assist in lessening the burden on the victims as the disaster resulted in tragic loss of lives and infrastructure,” said Proplastics Chief Executive Officer Mr. Kudakwashe Chigiya in an interview.

With most of the infrastructure in the affected areas having been destroyed by the effects of the Cyclone, Proplastics have identified how their services may further aid in the rehabilitation.

“As the leading plastics pipe producer in the country, we are now pursuing possibility of assisting towns that have been affected with the rehabilitation of water and sewer piping infrastructure,” he said.

The Proplastics team have joined the company’s initiative and have come forward with relief packages to assist the victims of Cyclone Idai.

“In addition, Proplastics staff members have put together materials in kind, mainly blankets, clothes, food stuffs and toiletries towards this tragic cause,” he said.

The piping company hopes that its actions will inspire others to answer the call of aid and assist in any way they can. The effects of the Cyclone have shaken the country as a whole and not just the people in the affected areas.

“We believe it is everyone’s duty to lend a helping hand in any way possible. It was through our corporate and social responsibility and the spirit of Ubuntu/Hunhu and being aware that no one will do it until we do it together.

Everyone has a part to play as the events of the cyclone are a national disaster and therefore have an effect on everyone be it at corporate or individual level, as we are one nation and we are each other’s brother’s keeper.

We hope that other organisations and individuals will follow suit with more kind and generous actions stepping forward to assist our fellow countrymen in need,” said Mr. Chigiya.
